"To surmount the situation of oppression, people must first critically recognize its causes, so that through transforming actions, they can create a new situation, one which makes possible the pursuit of a fuller humanity" (Freire, 2005, p. 47)
Instructional Competencies
I have been a teacher for more than 20 years now. I have taught at the secondary and post-secondary levels. My teaching approach is student-centered. I recognize my students bring a lot to the class, and try to build discussions from their insights, previous knowledge and experiences. I prioritize group conversations so students can think out loud. I believe in the power of telling personal stories and presenting ideas in a contextualised manner.
I have taught the following courses at UPEI
Bachelor's of Education Program
- ED-4630, Perspectives on culture and society in education.
- ED.4672 Practicum (currently teaching)
Master's of Education Program
- ED-6150 Educational Leadership
- ED 6190 Critical Pedagogy
- ED 6110 Introduction to Research iin Education (currently teaching)
I have put together a Teaching Portfolio of ED-6190 Critical Pedagogy which includes the course syllabus, the results of the SOTS and a letter from Charlene VanLeuween, Coordinator of the Teaching and Learning Center, after she observed my classes.
